Sri Lanka Export Processing Zone Stops Operation

Sri Lanka The largest export processing area, the Katunayake processing area in the free trade area, witnessed violent clashes between workers and Sri Lankan police in May 30th. More than 300 workers were injured and sent to the hospital, resulting in the processing area being forced on the second day after the incident. Stop operation

The violence is a controversial move by factory workers to protest against the Sri Lankan government's withdrawal. Grants After the bill.

The Sri Lankan government says the Katunayake processing zone will restart operations in June 2nd. However, the Sri Lankan trade union source pointed out that many workers were still in the hospital and other workers had returned home, with an estimated total of 48000 workers in the processing area.

Katunayake processing zone manufacturers believe that unless the government announced the maintenance of the subsidy act, factory workers will return to work in June 2nd.

"We will go back to work with workers in June 2nd," Dhammika Fernando, chairman of the Katunayake Free Trade Zone Manufacturers Association, told the media.

Factories exporting garments to the United Kingdom, the European Union and the United States say that garments will continue to export without interruption even when the trade zone is closed.

The Sri Lankan union is ready to accuse the police of the court, but has not yet decided to call for a strike, which means that the factory can slowly resume operations, but the factory shutdown has at least caused two days of production losses, and the production of the factory is expected to be reduced for some time.

Fernando said, "it is too early to talk about how much loss we have at this time. But after the incident, because we failed to start with sufficient strength, we will surely suffer some losses, but we can make up for the loss of production by working overtime to ensure that the delivery deadline set by our clients is guaranteed."
